Nokia and Oracle seals mapping deal.

Struggling Finnish vendor Nokia has struck a deal that will give Oracle’s customers access to its growing vault of map data and location services.

The Wall Street Journal claims the partnership could be announced later today in San Francisco at the OracleWorld conference.

The move will come as a boost to Nokia, as it looks for ways to strengthen the business. The quality of its map services are held in high regard throughout the industry and it has recently signed mapping deals with Groupon and Amazon. In 2008 Nokia acquired the world’s largest digital mapping firm Navteq.  In stark contrast with Nokia's troubled phone business, sales at Nokia's location business grew last quarter, although it still generates only 4 percent of group revenue.

The high-profile deal also comes as major rival Apple struggles with the launch of its own mapping services on the new iOS 6 platform.

Meanwhile Oracle is the world's third-biggest software firm but also sells hardware to corporate clients and in 2009 bought Sun Microsystems, the manufacturer of server computers and developer of Java and Solaris software. Oracle will tout the deal as an easy way for customers to use Nokia's maps to integrate consistent and broad mapping capabilities into Oracle applications.

All smartphones brands with NFC differentiate their products, where iPhone 5 lacks.

Although Apple's iPhone 5 is expected to enjoy strong sales, the lack of NFC (near field communication) functionality in the latest iPhone model will allow rival brands to differentiate their products and to become priority partners for launching NFC-enabled applications and services in cooperation with financial and telecom service companies, according to industry sources.
Most industry watchers believe that the reason Apple rolled out the iPhone 5 without built-in NFC functionality is that Apple aims to promote its in-house developed Passbook technology, which has already integrated a number of functionalities, including the processing of boarding passes, membership cards, tickets, value-stored cards, and various kinds of coupons, but not yet credit and debit cards.
Since a number of smartphone platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Bada as well as the forthcoming Windows Phone 8, all support NFC technology, financial firms, telecom carriers and advertisement agencies, among others, are likely to tie up with non-iPhone vendors to launch NFC-enabled services, said the sources.
Samsung Electronics has won the largest number of NFC-related cooperation projects in Europe and Asia, while RIM, HTC, LG Electronics and Nokia have also engaged in a number of cases, revealed the sources, noting that RIM has led rivals in establishing ties with the business sector for NFC applications.
HTC has recently launched three NFC-enabled models, the HTC Desire C, One XC and One X (16G-version), in cooperation with China Merchants Bank, supporting electronic wallet functionality launched by China UnionPay as well as payment systems of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, the sources commented.

China has become the largest Windows Phone device market. Nokia worlds biggest vendor.

China has become the largest Windows Phone device market. Nokia worlds biggest vendor.
China has become the largest Windows Phone device market, said Stephen Elop, chief executive officer of Nokia Corp, at a New York news briefing where Nokia launched its latest Lumia smartphones running on Windows 8 software.
Officials at Nokia China also confirmed to China Daily on Sept 6 that China is the biggest single-country market for Windows Phone devices manufactured by Nokia.
After Samsung presented the world’s first Windows 8 smartphone in Germany at the end of August, Nokia unveiled two Windows 8 models Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 on Wednesday, however without disclosing the prices and launch date of the handsets.
Elop, who took helm at Nokia in September 2010, has driven the company to be 100 percent dedicated to Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system and gradually abandon its Symbian platform. According to research firm Localytics, Nokia is the world’s biggest Windows Phone vendor, with a worldwide market share of 59 percent in July.
However, according to industry research firm Gartner, less than 3 percent of smartphones sold in the second quarter ran on the Windows Phone operating system. The majority of smartphones sold worldwide were still running on Google Inc’s Android operating system and Apple Inc’s iOS.
China has already edged out the United States to become the world’s biggest smartphone market. Overall, 160 million smartphones are expected to be sold in the Chinese market by the end of this year, up 141 percent from 67 million in 2011, an IHS report said.

Nokia In-Location a Indoor postioning technolgy gets Alliance members like Samsung, SONY, Qualcomm, Broadcom and many more.

Nokia In-Location a Indoor postioning technolgy gets Alliance members like Samsung, SONY, Qualcomm, Broadcom and many more.

High Accuracy Indoor Positioning (HAIP) based on Bluetooth low energy.

Nokia Research Center has developed Indoor Navigator to provide precise indoor location information on a handset, without needing GPS, the result a In-Location Alliance.

Members of the In-Location Alliance include Broadcom, CSR, Dialog Semiconductor, Eptisa, Geomobile, Genasys, Indra, Insiteo, Nokia, Nomadic Solutions, Nordic Semiconductor, Nordic Technology Group, NowOn, Primax, Qualcomm, Rapid Blue, Samsung Electronics, Seolane Innovation, Sony Mobile Communications, TamperSeal AB, Team Action Zone and Visioglobe.

Nokia has focused on and promoted the Nokia High Accuracy Indoor Positioning (HAIP) Solution, using a modified new generation, low energy feature of the Bluetooth® 4.0 specification, (above video) that allows for an accuracy of one metre. The technology can also be extended to an accuracy of 20cm with additional changes.

The modification to the standards-based Bluetooth Low Energy has been developed and prototyped by Nokia, and the changes are being formalised by Bluetooth Special Interest Group body.

The indoor location of a component in a position or on an object can be calculated by HAIP antenna elements installed in the ceiling or the area from the reception of the wireless signal that is transmitted by the component. The components can be installed in a mobile device, or they can be made as separate tags, which can be attached to any asset.

The key criteria for the indoor positioning technology are high accuracy, low power consumption, mobility, and the low cost. The solution has to be easy to implement and easy to use.

The Alliance members are confident that the key criteria have been met and technology demonstrations have already been designed and deployed in trial sites.

Why an alliance?
If Nokia has made so much progress, why is there the need for the alliance?
Nokia’s Jouni Kämäräinen, chair of the In-Location Alliance, told me:
“We are seeing the value of cooperation with companies that are interested in bringing out products based on indoor positioning; we are accelerating the market deployment of these indoor positioning solutions and services and with the alliance we can predict that companies will be more willing to invest and start implementing of these features into mobile devices.”
Jouni hopes that, with other industry players in the alliance, the alliance members can bring the technology to the market sooner and also extend the technology in the future and provide new use cases and opportunities.

Creating an eco-system

With an alliance working together, consumers will ultimately benefit since different applications, systems and devices will work together. Also a standards-based solution (as opposed to a proprietary one) will make it low cost and easier to deploy.

Jukka Rantala, who has worked on the commercialisation of the HAIP solution for Nokia, said:
“We are building an eco-system for companies to bring the indoor positioning solution to every building in the world and therefore we need to have companies who are representing different roles in the value chain, like telecom operators, system manufacturers, application developers and handset manufacturers other than Nokia.”

The In-Location Alliance will work together in three areas:
  1. Continue working together on system architecture based on a standard based indoor positioning solution.
  2. Alliance members will prepare and execute pre-commercial pilots and practical demonstrations starting in the second half of 2012.
  3. Alliance members will brainstorm and evaluate new use cases and new business opportunities based on indoor positioning technology.

In the real world

It is that third area, where the alliance looks at how and where an indoor positioning solution, like HAIP, might be used, that is particularly exciting because that is how we will be using the technology in our daily lives.

One of the possible new applications is the ability to receive special offers, coupons and advertisements to your phone when you go past a shop. Other use cases in large factories are also being explored.

The indoor positioning technology could also help you find objects in your home, guide you towards your departure gate at an airport, track the players on a football match or work as a safety and monitoring device for an elderly person at home alone.

Picking up on the theme of possible uses, Jouni says:
“You can use the mobile phone as a navigation tool at the airport or in a shopping mall. If you are in a big arena, like football stadium, then you could connect yourself to your friends because you can get your location and your friend’s location.”
“We can see the benefits of indoor positioning technology, especially in big venues, such as hospitals, railway stations, factories, museums and schools. We’ve even had discussions with ship owners who would like to offer better services for their passengers on cruise ships,” says Jouni.
“The Compatibility and Industry Collaboration (CIC) unit in the Nokia Chief Technology Office wants to promote standards and open interfaces to ensure multivendor environment and interoperability”, adds Jouni.

Next steps

HAIP (High Accuracy Indoor Positioning) could become a reality much sooner than expected.

There is work underway within the Bluetooth Special Interest Group by its member companies to evolve the specification to enable high accuracy indoor positioning. The technology can be deployed in in new phones, tablets, laptops or any kind of handheld device.

As a new industry standard, indoor positioning functionality will not add any significant cost to the price of new handsets. Companies may choose to use it as a premium service where there is a cost to the end user at the point of use.

What makes it exciting is that so many different use cases are still being explored, and many of which are yet to be thought of. This could be the strength of the alliance: to make it happen quicker and to make it happen in many ecosystems.

Jouni says:
“This Alliance is a new form of cooperation and should be seen as a bold answer to heavy and inflexible standard based institutions. We are aiming to focused objectives and concentrate on pilot programs. At the moment we have more than 20 companies who are in the Alliance, we would welcome more companies to join.”

Why this technology? helps you find ‘needle in a haystack’

When was the last time you had that frustrating experience in a large supermarket, where you’ve been walking around in circles trying to find a small item?

Or, maybe you once found yourself wandering for ages around a huge airport or shopping centre, trying to find a toilet?

Problems such as these, and other many other needle-in-a-haystack scenarios cannot be solved with GPS, but they are waiting to be solved by a new industry alliance based on indoor navigation that is being launched today.

The In-Location Alliance, of which Nokia is a founding member, includes more than 20 companies across different industries.

The alliance will be working together on the innovation and promotion of a new standard-based short-range wireless technology that will make it possible to locate objects or positions indoors with extremely high accuracy using mobile devices.

Official : Nokia and Microsoft send out invitations for the Sept 5 event in NYC.

The event will take place in New York at 9:30 A.M  . What Nokia and Microsoft are going to announce or unveil?

Speculations about a new line of Lumias with WP8  and dual-cores and quad-core cpus, for the software based when Microsoft gave us a sneak peek at Windows Phone 8, AKA Apollo, back in June:

Windows Phone 8 will share a kernel, file system, media foundation, device drivers, and parts of the security model of Windows 8, and is due out in the fall. Packing support for multi-core processors, displays up to 1280x768, and external SD storage, Windows Phone 8 will bring Internet Explorer 10 to Windows Phone devices as well as in-app purchases, , and improved enterprise features (including device management for administrators, Office apps, support for BitLocker encryption, and secure boot mode).

Maybe NFC beam share technology on board?

At this time  we believe Nokia have to match a lot with the competiton have out there and with what is upcoming in September 12.

Confirmed: Nokia and Microsoft to unveil new smartphones with Windows Phone 8 in Sept 5.

We reported yesterday a rumour that Nokia is expected to unveil its next-generation Windows Phone 8-based Lumia phones at Nokia World scheduled to be held in early September.
But today Nokia said  it will hold a joint media event with Microsoft Corp in New York on September 5.

The Finnish company gave no details about the September event, but Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said earlier on Wednesday the company would unveil soon a new smartphone using Microsoft's latest smartphone software known as Windows Phone 8.

Elop did not deny a September launch when he spoke to reporters earlier on Wednesday. He said only that Windows Phone 8 smartphones would be released in the "relatively near term."

Nokia has not commented on specific plans for its Nokia World trade show event in Helsinki on September 5 and 6.
