Samsung to hire US talents with Masters and Doctoral degrees.

Samsung Electronics wants to increase its global talent pool by hiring graduates with master’s or doctoral degrees from prestigious U.S. universities.

The world’s largest electronics maker said Wednesday that it is looking to hire those with doctorate degrees in science and engineering or those who expect to be awarded them by the end of the year.

It will also look to those with MBAs and pick interns from those still in college. Doctorate candidates must have a degree in electoral engineering, computer engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, medical engineering and material engineering.

MBA applicants must have two years work experience in companies and have a degree in marketing, management development, product strategy and business strategy.

The company will take applicants until October 16. It didn’t disclose how many they would pick.

Samsung started employing those with postgraduate degrees from the United States in 2000. The firm earns over 80 percent of its revenue abroad, with North America being one of the most important portions, said a Samsung spokesman. The company plans to continuously gather talented individuals who demonstrate an understanding of local sentiment to further boost its business there.

The United States is home to many of Samsung’s competitors and clients in the information technology industry. The Suwon-based firm has been increasing its market share in America in various areas, especially smartphones. It also has a chip factory in Texas.

Those selected will start their internship next summer and start working full time in 2014 at the company’s office in Korea.

Other Samsung Group affiliates such as Samsung Display and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology are also looking for people with postgraduate degrees. The display maker will take applications from holders of eight different masters or doctorate degrees in science and engineering until Monday. The group’s research leg will hire until October 15 from six different study areas with the same academic standards.

LTE: Huawei launches the Ascend P1 LTE smartphone. Video Promo.

Huawei announced availability of its Ascend P1 LTE smartphone, describing it as “the device compatible with the highest number of frequency bands”. As previously announced, it will initially be available in the UK through Everything Everywhere, with other markets set to follow.

According to the Chinese company, Ascend P1 LTE is being tested on operator networks across Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific regions. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier this year, Huawei revealed aggressive smartphone targets for 2012,looking to ship 60 million devices – compared with 20 million in 2011. Much of the growth will come from its home market, as customers transition from smartphones to feature phones.

The company is already offering a non-LTE version of the Ascend P1 worldwide, and has created a TD-SCDMA market for China Mobile.

Samsung targets 400 million handsets sold, Note 2 coming to all major US carriers.

Samsung is targeting 400 millions handsets  sold for this year 2012, instead of the initial 370 million projected.

The Galaxy Note 2 is coming to all major US carriers, and not only to AT&T as happened with the Galaxy Note first version.

The Note 2 will be available to consumers in the United States from late next month or early November. Samsung plans to roll out the device in 12 countries via 260 clients, said Samsung. 

"More consumers in Europe and the United States are acknowledging the Galaxy Note’s S-Pen functionality. We’ve been receiving very constructive responses from consumers in existing developed markets," said Shin.

In terms of hardware specifications, the Note 2 is far better than Apple’s iPhone5. The Note 2 features a 5.5-inch high-definition (HD) Super OLED screen, while the iPhone5 still uses a 4-inch Retina Display supplied by LG Display. 

The product uses a display with 1280-by-720 resolution and a 16:9 contrast ratio at a density of 267 pixels-per-inch (ppi) _ the iPhone’s screen has a 1136-by-640 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio at a density of 326 ppi.

The Note2 is powered by 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android software. The version included many improvements, including Google Now, Project Butter and Google Wallet.

The touch lag issue has been considered Android's biggest weakness, but Google Now, a voice-activated app available in over 40 languages, seemed to have resolved the issue as it provides users with personalized services by recognizing repeated actions. The function is based on Google's extensive search database.

The Galaxy Note 2 provided various multitasking with an enhanced S-Pen functionality. The Air View function offers a quicker and easier search into content by allowing users to hover with the S Pen over an email, S Planner, image gallery, or video to preview contents without having to open it, said Samsung in a statement. 

Samsung Electronics said Wednesday that it will hold a top-level meeting with its biggest software business partner Google today. 

Samsung, which is the representative of Google’s Android community in an ongoing fight with Apple, is pulling Google into its battle to seek royalties for patents.

"I will meet Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt on Thursday in Seoul," said Samsung mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun at a launch event to unveil Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 held at the company’s main office in downtown Seoul.

Shin declined to give details, but stressed that strategic meetings with major carriers in the United States are set for next week.

Samsung has already been in talks for the development of modified products aimed at escaping from Apple’s design-related patents.

The Google representative arrived in Seoul late Tuesday and Schmidt will hold a news conference with local and overseas media at Google Korea headquarters, downtown Seoul, today, to roll out its Nexus 7 tablet, here.

Lois Kim, the head of communications at Google Korea, refused to give any details about Schmidt’s plans during his stay in Seoul.

The top meeting comes after Apple faces becoming embroiled in a further clash after Samsung said earlier it was intending to sue the firm over technology patent violations in the new iPhone 5.

Meanwhile, a panel of U.S. federal judges is to follow up a separate complaint by Google which is seeking a far-reaching sales ban against Apple products.

Although the fight with Apple is becoming more dramatic, Shin clarified his bullish stance to boost handset sales by saying Samsung doesn’t much care about the ongoing litigation-related issues.

The company is widening its gap with Apple in phone shipments. During the second quarter of the year, Samsung and Apple sold 50 million and 26 million phones, respectively, according to market research firms.

Officials said the gap is expected to further widen due to Apple’s slowing innovation in products. Samsung has shortened its new mobile launch cycle _ it introduced various flagship products including the Galaxy S3 and the Note 2 to respond to faster changes in consumer demand.

In contrast, Apple is still sticking with its ``one smartphone per year’’ policy, making it difficult for the Cupertino-based firm to fight with Samsung in the race for smartphone market domination.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which was introduced at last month’s IFA technology fair in Germany, is a hybrid smartphone and tablet PC. The revised sales target by Samsung is based on Shin’s optimism for the success of the just-launched device.

"I have no doubt that the Note 2 will hit the jackpot. We don’t have any problems to sell over 3 million Note 2s during the first three months after the device was launched," said Shin.

AT&T has launched LTE network in Detroit, MI; Honolulu, HI; Seattle, WA; Pittsburgh, PA and Portland, OR markets as it continues nationwide 4G LTE rollout. With this new addition, AT&T LTE network is now live in 72 markets.

According to AT&T,  its HSPA+ and LTE network covers 275 million people and almost 90 percent of its mobile data traffic now runs over enhanced backhaul that supports both HSPA+ and 4G LTE data traffic.

AT&T expects its LTE deployment to be largely complete by year-end 2013.

Over the past five years, AT&T invested more than $115 billion into operations and into acquiring spectrum and other assets that have enhanced our wireless and wired networks.

As mobile manufacturers announce new phones in advance of the holidays, Nielsen took a snapshot look at the mobile market in the U.S. Smartphone penetration continued to grow in July 2012, with 55.5 percent of mobile subscribers in the U.S. now owning smartphones. This is a significant increase compared to July 2011 when only 41 percent of mobile subscribers owned smartphones.

Overall, young adults are leading the growth in smartphone ownership in the U.S., with 74 percent of 25-34 year olds now owning smartphones, up from 59 percent in July 2011. Interestingly, teenagers between 13 and 17 years old demonstrated the most dramatic increases in smartphone adoption, with the majority of American teens (58%) owning a smartphone, compared to roughly a third (36%) of teens saying they owned a smartphone just a year ago.

“Among most age groups smartphones represent the majority of U.S. mobile subscribers, but American teens were the age group adopting smartphones the fastest,” Nichole Henderson, a Nielsen analyst, said. “As teens increase in their share of smartphone owners, mobile carriers and manufacturers should consider how to market to this growing group.”

Android handsets continue to lead the smartphone market, with both a majority of smartphone owners and recent acquirers (those who obtained their handset in the last 3 months) now owning a phone that runs on the Android operating system. Apple’s iPhone followed closely with a share of 34 percent of smartphone owners and 33 percent of recent acquirers choosing an iOS handset. BlackBerry handsets decreased to an 8 percent share of the U.S. smartphone market and only 3 percent of recent acquirers.

USA: Smartphones consumers supporting Samsung Galaxy SIII, the device is sold out around the country.

According to PC World a survey of 16 retailers conducted by Trip Chowdhry, the managing director for equity research at Global Equities, two Costco stores were sold out of Galaxy S III phones that run on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks, another sold out all its AT&T models and two out of three Sprint stores were sold out.

Three Verizon stores still had the smartphone, Chowdhry said, but the retailers reported that the Samsung device had been outselling the iPhone during the month.

All five AT&T stores polled said they saw "significant" sales of Samsung’s device in the first few days after the verdict.

Asked by PCWorld why a verdict favoring Apple was sparking sales for Samsung, Chowdhry replied: "The Samsung Galaxy S III is a very good and popular phone. People probably thought they may not be able to buy it in the future following the jury verdict."

Customers appear to have rushed out to buy the Galaxy S III, with some stores running out of stock of the smartphone, according to a report from Global Equities Research.

Although the jury found that 28 Samsung products had infringed, Apple is looking to ban the sale of the 8 Samsung smartphones on the chart below:

"In response to the Court’s August 24, 2012, Apple respectfully submits the following chart, reflecting the eight out of the twenty-eight adjudicated infringing products for which it seeks a preliminary injunction pending a final injunction. Each “X” reflects a jury finding in Apple’s favor and the “Q[__]” reference identifies the question on the verdict form at which the finding can be found."

Why is Apple seeking just the ban of 8 instead of 28 smartphones? Maybe the 20 not mentioned are not available  in the USA anymore  or are obsolete at this time.

The injunction hearing for the eight smartphones is slated for September 20th.

According to the Verge a Samsung Galaxy mid-range phones are coming to USA carriers, below the list of them:

• Galaxy Admire 4G for MetroPCS. An upgrade to the Admire, the Admire 4G adds LTE support and more closely resembles the original Galaxy S (exactly the design Apple's trying to stop, in fact). Strangely, it's currently slated to get Android 2.3 — hopefully that changes by the time it's on shelves.
• Galaxy Discover for TracFone. The ultra-budget prepaid carrier doesn't currently offer any branded smartphones, so the Galaxy Discover could end up being its first. It's slated to get Android 4.0, Bluetooth 3.0, "ample" internal storage, and external expansion up to 32GB. This one looks a bit like an original Galaxy S, too, but features three capacitive buttons along the bottom instead of the classic four.
• Galaxy Stellar for Verizon. This is the phone that leaked last month as the "Jasper," a Droid Charge successor that keeps the original's unusual pointy chin. It's tapped to get a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 2,100mAh battery, Android 4.0, and — of course — LTE.
• Galaxy Stratosphere 2 for Verizon. Samsung doesn't seem to have any intention of pushing QWERTY sliders globally, but American carriers are clearly still asking for them — and that's where the Stratosphere 2 comes into play. The follow-on to last year's Stratosphere, this new model features global GSM roaming capability, SAFE approval to make IT departments happy, S Beam, and S Voice.
• Galaxy Victory 4G LTE for Sprint. Leaked several weeks ago under model number SPH-L300, the unwieldy name underpins a phone that will likely slot in underneath the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S III in Sprint's portfolio: Android 4.0, LTE support, NFC, a 5-megapixel camera, and WVGA display are all rumored to be on tap.

US number-one operator Verizon Wireless said its LTE network will cover more than 75 percent of the country’s population with its introduction in 34 new markets and expansion in 38 existing markets today.

The network is the largest in the US and will now cover 371 US markets, more than all other US operators combined, according to Verizon Wireless chief technical officer Nicola Palmer. “We are ahead of schedule with our 4G LTE market roll out and will provide 4G LTE network coverage to more than 400 markets in the near future,” she said.

In March, the operator pledged that its LTE network would be available in 400 markets and cover 260 million people by the end of the year. It also said it would ensure all new smartphones launched in 2012 were compatible with the network.

Rival AT&T’s LTE network now covers more than 74 million people in 51 markets and the operator hopes to reach potential coverage areas of 150 million people by the end of the year. Number-three operator Sprint started its LTE rollout in July with 15 markets and expects to have “largely completed” the implementation of the new network across the country by the end of 2013.

The Verizon Wireless LTE network is going live today in cities in Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Science: A drainage system of the brain is discovered.

Neuroscientists Medical Center, of the University of Rochester (USA) have discovered a drainage system by which the brain eliminates waste, according to a study published today in Science Translational Medicine, they expect to have application in Alzheimer's research and Parkinson's. 

The system acts like pipes that leverage the brain's blood vessels and seems to do the same function in the brain that the lymphatic system in the rest of the body, drain waste products. 

The lead author and co Neuromedicina Center at the University of Rochester, Maiken Nedergaard said "waste cleanup is vital to all organs and have long been questions about how the brain gets rid of their waste .

 "This work shows that the brain is being cleaned in a more organized and a much larger scale than was previously believed," Nedergaard said he expressed his wish that this finding is useful for treating brain diseases.

 " We hope that these results have implications for many conditions affecting the brain such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, stroke and Parkinson's disease, "he added. Nedergaard's team has called the new system" the glinfático system "because it acts similarly to the lymphatic system, but is managed by brain cells called glial cells. 

The team made the discovery in mice, whose brains are very similar to the human brain. Scientists have known that CSF has an important role in cleaning the brain tissue, charged with waste products and nutrients to the brain tissue through a process known as diffusion. 

The newly discovered system circulates through all parts of the brain more efficiently through what scientists call the global flow. "It's as if the brain has two garbage collectors - one slow and one fast we knew we just met," Nedergaard said "Given the high rate of metabolism in the brain and high sensitivity, it is not surprising that its mechanisms for disposal of waste is more specialized and extensive than previously thought, "he added.

Black Samsung Galaxy S III has been recently spotted in the UK.  This version of the device is now listed at T-Mobile USA, which indicates the Galaxy S III black will be released in North America as well, and not only in Europe.

Rumor has it that black Galaxy S III will be launched by the end of this month,  and there's a chance that this one will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, , it comes in line with previous unconfirmed reports that Samsung successfully completed firmware tests for this update.

President Obama phoned the team at JPL on Monday, Aug. 13, to congratulate them on the successful landing of Curiosity. "It's inspiring to all of us. Photographs that are coming back are going to be remarkable and amazing," President Obama said.

"If, in fact, you do make contact with Martians, please let me know right away. I've got a lot of other things on my plate, but I suspect that that would go to the top of the list, even if they're just microbes," he said.

The new stores are important to Microsoft, since the company's Surface tablet will only sold at its own retail locations (as well as online). Adding another dozen stores to the 31 Microsoft Stores either already open or planning to open soon will give Microsoft's tablet a much-needed boost.

According to Microsoft's job postings, new stores will be opening in the following cities: Natick and Braintree, Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri; Cleveland, Ohio; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco, California; San Antonio, Texas; Chicago, Illinois, New York, New York; two locations in Miami, Florida; and Vancouver, British Columbia and one in Toronto,Ontario.

Since the Surface is exclusively sold at retail through Microsoft's own stores, it gives customers an extra reason to walk through the door. Surface generated a lot of positive buzz for the company when it was announced in June.

According to the latest research published by Strategy Analytics’ Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service, smartphone shipments fell 5 percent annually to reach 24 million units in the United States during the second quarter of 2012. The Android operating system lost ground to Apple iOS as Android’s market share fell four points on an annual basis to 56 percent.

This was one of the slowest growth rates ever experienced by the important US smartphone market. A volatile economy, maturing penetration of smartphones among contract mobile subscribers, and major operators tightening their upgrade policies to enhance profits were among the main causes of the slowdown.

Android remains the number one platform by volume in the United States, but its market share is peaking as Apple iOS gains ground. Apple’s US market share has risen by ten points from 23 percent in Q2 2011 to 33 percent in Q2 2012. Apple is rumoured to be launching a new iPhone in the coming weeks, and that event, if it takes place, is going to heap even more pressure on Android in its home market.

Blackberry’s smartphone market share in the United States has dropped from 11 percent to 7 percent over the past year, reaching its lowest level in recent history. Consumers, businesses and operators continue to be frustrated by Blackberry’s limited toushcreen smartphone portfolio and repeated delays to its new BB10 operating system.
