Apple iPad 2 versus the Third Generation iPad

Apple now officially will have two different models of the iPad. For now you can still get the Apple iPad 2 in both WiFi only and 3G configurations, with storage options of 16, 32 and 64 GB, an the price is Php5,000 less than the newer iPad with the same storage. By the time the third generation iPad rolls, only the 16 GB versions of the iPad 2 will be available.

The iPad 2 starting at Php18,990, is Php5,000 cheaper than the Third Generation iPad which will be priced at Php23,990. The 3G models are selling for Php6,000 cheaper. Php5,000-6,000 is a fair amount of money and saving are always good. So? Should which iPad should you select? Is the iPad 2 worth the additional Php5,000-6000? 

Here are the key differences:

Display and graphics. The iPad 2 has a 1024 x 768 display while the Third Generation iPad has a 2046 x 1536 display. The new display has four times the pixel density on the iPad 2, and will give you a sharper and crisper image. There is one issue with this. The iPad 2 has a dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics processing unit, while the new Third Generation iPad quad core PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU. 

While the Third Generation iPad has twice the graphics power, it also works four time as hard. In that sense the iPad 2 actually should actually be able to play 3D games faster, albiet at a lower screen resolution. However, we do expect developers to build around the Third Generation iPad, and so it should not matter.

Connectivity. The iPad 2 supports HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity, while the Third Generation iPad supports HSDPA+ 21.1 Mbps connectivity and has an LTE version also. If you are buying a WiFi only device, this is irrelevant.

Cameras. I do not see the point of a camera on the back of a tablet. Smartphones make better cameras. But if you find it important, has a 0.72 MP camera, while the Third Generation iPad has a 5 MP camera. 

So which is a better buy?

Given that both the iPad 2 and the Third Generation iPad. still use the same dual core processor, the iPad 2 will not become obsolete any sooner than the Third Generation iPad. Any apps built for the Third Generation iPad will run on the iPad 2, but at a lower resolution. The Third Generation iPad will also have a bigger battery and more RAM than the iPad 2, but that is really to allow it to use 2046 x 1536 display and keep performance at the same level as the iPad 2.

The camera upgrade is irrelevant to me. But the faster connectivity is not. If you are buying the 3G or LTE version, I think the faster connectivity is worth the money. The HSDPA 7.2 Mbps standard was one year behind when the iPad 2 was released in 2011 (several devices in 2010 already supporting HSDPA 14.4 Mbps). Both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications rolled out HSDPA+ 21.1 Mbps networks. That alone is worth the Php5,000. If you are getting the 3G version, I think you should get the new Third Generation iPad.

If you are getting the WiFi only version, it boils down to the display. Personally, I am happy enough with the 1024 x 768 display of the iPad, but the 2046 x 1536 display will look much sharper. If you are getting the WiFi only version, my advice would be to wait until you can see both side-by-side at an Apple store and decide if the new display is worth the additional 5K.

Angry Birds Space Officially Announced

Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Facebook and now Angry Birds Space. The most popular and Awards winning Angry Birds are now going galactic, with National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA. As promised by Rovio, Entertainment Media Company, Angry Birds has been officially announced today.

While some internet browsers are for-profit applications backed by major corporations, the SeaMonkeybrowser suite is an open-source, community-driven project. This means any developers, marketers or testers interested in contributing to the development of the internet browser can do so. However, many of SeaMonkey’s inherent drawbacks are a result of its open-source platform, and the browser lacks the sleekness and ease of use the top internet browsers in our lineup possess.

The hallmark feature of SeaMonkey is the fact that it is an all-in-one internet suite. This means not only does it provide browsing capabilities, it also has an email client, built-in chat and a WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) editor that helps you build simple, basic websites. Subsequently, SeaMonkey is a good default browser if you are seeking an all-inclusive internet suite that limits the number of individual applications you need to utilize.

We also liked that the browser supports most of the add-ons and extensions compatible with Mozilla’s Firefox; both internet browsers use the same rendering engine. SeaMonkey also offers beneficial features such as a password manager, customizable toolbars and the ability to restore sessions. The internet browser, however, doesn’t provide many of the more advanced features we looked for in web browsers. It doesn’t provide mouse gestures or voice interaction for multimodial browsing, nor does it have a native RSS feeder or the ability to save bookmarks.

Since SeaMonkey is built on Mozilla’s source code, the internet browser also benefits from most of Mozilla’s security functions. The internet browser safeguards against most online threats including viruses, rootkits and fraudulent phishing websites. You can also download new security updates directly from the SeaMonkey website. 

When it comes to ease of use, SeaMonkey is easy to install and its features are easy to access and utilize. With that said, the SeaMonkey interface feels clunky and outdated, reminiscent of a very early version of Firefox. Its lack of polish doesn’t hamper usability but it does make the internet browser feel archaic and obsolete, especially compared to the other internet browsers we reviewed.

One area we were surprised to find SeaMonkey perform below our expectations was in speed. The internet browser uses the same source code as Firefox but it surprisingly slower. In our time trials, it took SeaMonkey nearly six seconds to first initialize, with an average startup time of five seconds. The web browser’s navigation speed from one page to another was slightly faster, at about four seconds. The difference in speed between SeaMonkey and our top-ranked internet browsers is just a few seconds but in terms of browsing speed, that difference can be significant.

SeaMonkey provides very few support options for users. As an open-source platform, the browser relies heavily on community users to provide support. The user forums prove to be a good resource, where you can ask questions and find relevant information to your inquiry.

Summary

SeaMonkey is a good, but far from great, internet browser. Its features are practical, albeit basic, and it provides protection from dangerous internet threats. Many users will also find its all-in-one functionality convenient. However, SeaMonkey desperately needs a facelift and improved browsing speeds in order to compete with the more widely used internet browsers on the market.

Android ICS update comes to HTC Sensation XE and Samsung Galaxy S II

GSM Arena reports that Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) updates for the HTC Sensation XE have started to roll-out in Europe. The HTC Sensation Android 4.0 update includes a Sense 3.6 user interface. The Good

As you might expect, browser does indeed feel fast. In fact, I went ahead and deleted cache (no change), just because it loaded non-heavy web pages instantly; but then again, you can achieve pretty much same results with most modern web browsers, such as: Google Chrome.

What about features?

Maxthon 3 includes Opera’s Speed Dial with drag & drop support, allowing you to quickly access frequently visited web pages.

Additionally, you can synchronize your favorites across difference computers (registration is required, obviously).

One of the more interesting Maxthon 3 features is “Maxthon Multi Search”. Basically, it allows you to quickly seek for information via different search engines. Can be really useful, especially when it comes to images search or news.

Fortunately for web developers, it also includes WebKit Developer Tools (see the following page for comparison). No additional files or add-ons are required, just hit on the icon and you are all set.

Maxthon Magic Fill

Settings page is where Maxthon 3 truly shines. Have you ever found a setting that was not well explained (if explained at all)? Well, worry no more. Thanks to geniuses behind the idea, Maxthon does a pretty good job explaining some of them.

The Bad

Although Maxthon 3 includes an integrated ad hunter, when it comes to more “advanced” use, it’s really not that useful. I couldn’t easily block flash ads and browser crashed when I tried to turn this feature off.

ACID3

As you can see from test results, although Maxthon scored 100/100, it has not passed the test.

What happens when you turn on developer tools on such page?

Anything else?

Yes, sometimes browser feels like a mess, it’s hard to find a specific setting or function you want. For example: I was trying to view page source, pressed Alt button to see the menu but nothing happened. Then went to the menu itself but couldn’t find “View Source” item. Tried “page menu” (where you enable Developer Tools, etc.), still no luck..

All I had to do was simply click right mouse button and vuala. Same with search, you can’t find “multi-search” settings in browser “Options…” menu.

Customization

One of the biggest Maxthon 3 downfalls is UI customization, or lack of it. I am not sure if it’s even possible to remove a single design element or button.

It’s like developers saying: here, use it as we tell you to, and don’t you dare to change anything.

The second-oldest browser currently in use, Opera debuted way back in 1995 and has recently undergone a major overhaul. No longer the quirky choice of enthusiasts, Opera has developed into a robust, full-featured suite of browsing tools.

Opera covers the basics with tabbed browsing, mouse-over previews, a customizable search bar, advanced bookmarking tools, and simple integration with e-mail and chat clients. Mouse-gesture support, keyboard shortcuts, and drag-and-drop functionality round out the essentials.

Installation
Installing Opera is a fast and short process, taking less than two minutes. Many of Opera's built-in features require creating a MyOpera account, but the browser will only prompt you to do so when you use them for the first time--it's not required to browse.

Tap the "Options" button on the first install screen to reveal configuration tweaks. Besides changing the browser's default language and install path, you can also install for just the currently-signed on user, or choose to install Opera directly to an external device. It's a great, simple way to create a portable version of Opera for a USB key.

Interface
Opera's interface keeps the same look that debuted in Opera 10.50, with a condensed menu button in the upper left corner, tabs on top, and a translucent status bar on the bottom that hosts buttons to reveal Opera's Panels, and to activate Link, Unite, and Turbo. The bottom right corner of the status bar sports a dedicated zoom button.

Rockmelt Browser Free Download.

RockMelt takes an interesting approach to web browsing by integrating social media directly into the browser making it much easier to communicate with your Facebook and Twitter networks, and to also share web content more quickly and efficiently. 

After a few days, People are starting to really enjoy the experience.  The browser is actually built on the Chrome platform, so People haven’t missed much of a step since They had switched to using the Chrome browser a month or so ago.  While there are some definite improvements necessary for People to officially switch to RockMelt as Their primary browser, it’s well on it’s way.  Here’s what People have observed thus far and what They think is good and what needs to be improved.

Good

1. Built On The Chrome Platform – This is great because RockMelt inherits all the benefits of the Chrome browser, specifically the ability to use Chrome extensions and browser speed.  You don’t miss a step by switching to RockMelt as inherently it’s just a variation of the Chrome Browser.
2. Fantastic UI – The UI is really great.  They love how they have the left and right rails to integrate social media as this makes the best use of screen real estate.  Very clean, and easy to use.
3. Facebook Integration – The Facebook integration is pretty tight.  I just found myself actually using the browser to update Facebook statuses, catch up on the news feed, and chat with others.  Some People also like the ability to create a list of favorites to pair down who you see online on the left rail.  I haven’t used the chat function much yet and early word is there are some bugs to work out.
4. Share Button – It couldn’t be easier to share web content.  The share button integrated into the browser seamlessly allows you to share the page you are on on Facebook and Twitter.

Improvements

1. Twitter Integration – Just not quite ready for primetime yet.  It’s great that the option is there, but the execution is off a bit.  I want to be able to make the default timeline be @mentions or lists I’ve created.  While you can switch to this, you can’t make it the default setting.  Also would like the option of choosing my URL shortener. 
2. More Chat Integration – I love the fact that you can chat directly with Facebook contacts, but would be even more useful is the option to use other chat clients as well.  The fact is, most of my contacts do not use Facebook as their chat client.  I love the idea of having chat clients integrated with the browser, but I haven’t come across a great execution on this.  It would be fantastic if RockMelt would give you the option of using chat clients such as Gmail, Live Messenger, Yahoo, etc.
3. Search Bar – When you use the search bar, the results actually pop up in a column rather then in the browser window.  It’s an interesting concept, but for me, I prefer the traditional approach.  While you can click a link at the top to move them into the tab, I would prefer a setting that would allow me to change this so that the default was in the browser tab.  I also prefer the single bar approach that Chrome has adopted where the top bar acts as both the URL and search box. 

The RockMelt browser is not for everyone.  If you are a heavy social media user, you’ll probably find the experience useful and enjoyable.  However if you only find yourself on Facebook or Twitter 1-2 times per day, I would stick with your normal browser of choice.  If RockMelt can make some of the improvements above, I could see myself becoming a heavier user and possibly making it my default browser choice.  Anything that can potentially minimize the number of programs or actions I have to take to manage my day is a good thing.  RockMelt is a step in the right direction.

Why the new third generation iPad might not really be faster than the iPad 2

During the launch of the new Apple iPad, Tim Cook highlighted the new display and quadcore graphics chip. 

Quick Comparison: 

iPad 2: Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics processing unit and 512 MB or RAM.

Third generation iPad: Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processor and PowerVR SGX543MP4 graphics processing unit. The amount of RAM is not yet confirmed but we do expect it to be 1 GB.

Mike Capps of Epic (developer of Infinity Blade and Infinity Blade Dungeon) in an interview with The Verge did make a notable comment. "When you think about it, they increased the resolution of the screen by a factor of four and they doubled the graphics performance, that wouldn't make you think, Great, we've got tons of extra graphics performance."

While I would think it is to early to say that the graphics performance is doubled, afterall Tim Cook did say it is four times faster, it really would have to be four times faster. 

The new 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution screen has four times as many pixels as the older 1024 x 768 resolution on the iPad 2. So in order to maintain the same performance in games as the iPad 2, the new PowerVR SGX543MP4 would have to be four times faster. RAM would have to be at least 1 GB to be so it could cache the larger files.

Another issue will be space. Infinity Blade takes up about 700 MB of storage. Games supporting the higher resolution will take up much more, which means where 16 GB may have been sufficient for the iPad 2, with the new iPad you may want to get the 32 GB or 64 GB model instead of the 16 GB model if you are a gamer.

Basically, I am not expecting the new third generation device to be more powerful than the iPad 2. It has a better camera, but in terms of performance for graphics intensive apps, the new hardware will not make it faster than the iPad 2. The hardware upgrade is needed to be able to use a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution screen and keep the performance of the new iPad on par with the iPad 2.

Still, that is not a bad thing, at least not in the short term. Since developers like to build for backward compatibility, most apps and games for iOS run fine on a single core processor and developers will continue to build apps that run fine on single core processors well into 2013 I think.

Still, it is a bit disappointing from a gaming standpoint. While the specifications of the new iPad will be enough for console quality gaming, a quad core processor would have gone a long way in bring PC level gaming to the iPad. 

Still if you think you can look at the 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution display, I don't think you can call this an incremental upgrade. This display is likely to be the iPad standard for years to come.

Apple iPad 2 prices reduced

The launched of the new third generation will not see the demise of the iPad 2 which will continue in production. We are not sure the entire iPad 2 line-up will continue into production for the entire year, or just the 16GB models (like with the iPhone 4). In any event, for now you can get the entire iPad 2 line-up at substantially lower prices.

Apple's new iPad

Apple has announced the next iteration of its iPad tablet, the Apple iPad. No, it is not called the iPad 3 or iPad HD, just iPad. 

The main draw of the new iPad is it's higher resolution 2048 x 1536 pixel "retina" display. This is actually just 264 pixels per inch and not the 326 pixels per inch you get on an iPhone 4 or 4S. But I really do not think anyone is going to notice the difference.

Connectivity has also been upgraded to HSDPA+ 21.1 Mbps/DC-SHDPA for international unit while US version will also be equipped with 4G LTE.  The camera  is also improved, now with 5 MP primary camera with 1080p video recording. It uses the same optics as the camera on the iPhone 4S, which has a pretty good camera. 

We wont be seeing the rumored quadcore A6 processor on the new iPad. Instead it has the A5X chip. This uses the same dual core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processor as the iPad 2, but the graphics chip  is upgraded to a quadcore PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU.

For those hoping for Siri, Siri is not available on the new iPad, but it does have voice dictation. Voice dictation is available in English, French, German and Japanese. 

The new iPad at 9.4 mm and 1.44 pounds, is a bit thicker and heavier than lasts year model, but not by much.

Pricing remains the same as the iPad 2. The iPad 2 itself will continue in production with a starting price of US$399. Still, I think the US$100 the 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution display is worth the money. The 1024 x 768 display on the iPad cannot play either 720p or 1080p content in its native resolution.

All in all, it is a pretty impressive package. Some will be disappointed with the absence of Siri or a quadcore processor, but most expectations were met. Isn't that good enough?
