Mobile phone running on Google Android operating system took a 61% share of the US Market in the first quarter of 2012, which is the same as their market share in the third quarter of 2011.
Apple iPhone market share dropped from 41% in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 29% in the first quarter of 2012. This is not too surprising as the fourth quarter spike for iPhone sales was mainly due to the release of a new version of the iPhone, and in other quarters the iPhone market share has been steadily below the 30% level.
Nielsen reports that 50.4% of all American's now own a smartphone, with Asian American's being the most likely to own one. Asian American are 67.3% likely to own a smartphone.
The United States is the second largest smartphone market in the world.
In the largest smartphone market in the world, China, Android sales accounted for 66% of sales in the first quarter of 2012 according to data from DigiTimes. Apple's iPhone had 19% of the China market.
In the Philippine Android continues its climb in market share. While we do not have data on Philippine sales, StatCounter measures page views in websites from mobile devices based in the Philippines.
The data shows that on sites were page views were measured by Statcounter, in April 2011, Android accounted for 7.74% of all mobile page views. In April 2012, Android accounted for 22.61% of all page views. This is a 300% growth in twelve months.
Apple iPhone maintained its position during the same period accounting for 19.38% of page views in April 2011 and 19.48% of page views in April 2012.
If you look at the chart, the wild spikes in Nokia market share are due to errors in recording pageviews from Nokia S40 (features phones) together with S60 (smartphones).
