The unofficial new Apple iPad 2 A5 32nm

Samsung recently unveiled its new 32 nanometer (nm) process used in the manufacture of its Exynos 4 Quad found in the Samsung Galaxy S III. This die shrink from the previous 45 nm process results in reduce power consumption of about 20%, with as high as 29% intensive tasks like gaming.

Samsung manufactures A5 processors for Apple's iPad 2. AnandTech reports that at least some iPad 2's ship with newer 32 nm A5 chips instead of the older 45 nm A5 chips. The upgraded chip gives the iPad 2 about 2 hours of additional battery life.

However, the upgrade is not officially announced by Apple, so if you are buying a new iPad 2 there is no way to tell for sure if you are getting the new 32 nm chip or the older 45 nm one.

The new chip will only be found in the newly manufactured iPad 2's, meaning the 16 GB WiFi and 16 GB WiFi + 3G models. Those buying the new budget priced iPad 2 could be in for a nice threat.

Why use the new A5 chip in some iPad 2's? It looks like Apple is testing the new 32 nm process for the chip it will put in the new iPhone.
